The Koochiching County Courthouse has unusually rich official history. The cornerstone was laid July 13, 1909, and the courthouse was built in 1910. C.E. Bell of Minneapolis designed it, and O.J. Oyen of La Crosse, Wisconsin built it. The original cost was $41,700 plus plumbing and heating. The building is Beaux Arts, with a rusticated limestone first story, red brick upper stories, stone belt courses, projecting cornice, brick parapet, stone coping, and a central domed cupola.
Interior details include simple wall stenciling, brass stairway fixtures, an old courtroom and offices on the third floor, and a circular mezzanine below a muraled dome. The murals depict the stern-wheel steamer Itaska, a logging sleigh, the falls before dam construction, and Alexander Baker. A two-story east addition was built in 1975-76 for a new courtroom and offices, and a west wing was added in 1979 for jail and law enforcement space. The courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
